six rules.
what every object has to be
before it leaves the workshop
- 01 · job one. Each object solves exactly one problem, completely. If it does two things, it's two objects.
- 02 · controls as few as possible. If it needs a manual, it isn't finished. Most of ours need one button.
- 03 · app not required. It works out of the box, and keeps working if a company or a server goes away.
- 04 · life decades. Repairable, with parts you can replace and nothing designed to wear out on purpose.
- 05 · materials honest. Aluminium, steel, wood and recycled plastic, finished so you can see what they are.
- 06 · made in small runs. Every object is field-tested by real people before the first one ships.
five steps.
from a small, stubborn annoyance
to an object in your hand
- step 01 notice Find a problem so ordinary that nobody thought to solve it.
- step 02 sketch Draw the simplest object that could make it go away. Start from the block: one solid, one button.
- step 03 build Make it real: cardboard, then printed parts, then metal. Break it on purpose until it stops breaking.
- step 04 live with it Field-test it in real homes and workplaces until it disappears into the day.
- step 05 make it Produce it in small, careful runs, built to be repaired.
